Richard Coles

As a financial planner, Richard will help construct and assist with implementation of your personal financial plan.

Born and educated in England, Richard worked his way up through various roles at a stockbroker’s office before ending up as a member of the London Stock Exchange and a dealer on the trading floor. Shortly after the stock market crash of 1987 he entered the world of personal financial advice. Richard learned his trade while training at Barclays Bank and Lloyds Bank in London, but became disillusioned with the hard-sell approach and the lack of true client focus that seemed to be standard fare in large financial organizations. After a year with a Friendly Society (a non-profit in Kent), he formed his own financial services practice in January 1998. This practice was successfully run on a fee-basis and expanded to take on an additional advisor and a mortgage advice subsidiary.

A firm believer in demonstrating competence in all areas of financial advice, Coles strived to remain a generalist rather than specializing in any particular niche. He passed advanced examinations in taxation and investments, became a licensed pension advisor and acquired the UK’s Certified Financial Planner (CFP)® designation. Richard no longer holds this designation

In 2003, Richard’s Chicago-born wife, Vivian, convinced him to relocate with their three daughters to the states. Knowing that he did not want to work with any business that put the pursuit of profit before its clients, he found an ideal fit in the fee-only ethos and great reputation for client service at D. Scott Neal, Inc.

He quickly passed the exam to become a U.S. Certified Financial Planner and went on to earn the designation as a Certified Divorce Financial Planner. He is a member of the Financial Planning Association (FPA). He brings an old world charm, British wit, and his delightful English accent into client meetings.
